Marcello Lippi’s career started with Viareggio Youth Club, where he played from 1963 to 1969, before being purchased by UC Sampdoria. However, he first played a season as a professional footballer only when loaned to FC Savona, in the Serie C league. He then got back to his football club where he played for the following seasons. He soon turned to be one of the UC Sampdoria key players of the 1970s.

In 1979 he left UC Sampdoria for US Pistoiese - back then in the Serie B league. He made a significant contribution for the club from Tuscany to earn its memorable promotion to top-level Serie A league.

He topped off his professional career in 1982 with FC Lucchese.

He scored a total of 5 goals and 188 caps in Serie A league, as well as 2 goals and 96 caps in Serie B league. With a number of 274 caps in US Sampdoria, he is the tenth most capped Sampdoria player to date.
